FIRE PROTECTION FOR STEEL STRUCTURES WITH STABITERM COATINGS

Our product range includes solutions for both outdoor and indoor conditions.

Our product range includes solutions for both outdoor and indoor conditions.
Fire protection of steel structures is a requirement of construction standards and the foundation for protection of buildings against collapse in case of fire. One layer of fire protection coating can protect steel from high temperatures, i.e. increase the fire-resistance limit of steel up to 150 minutes.

To create compositions Stabiterm we rely on our own scientific research and advanced materials. Stabiterm solutions for metal retain their operational properties for 25 years.
Stabiterm fire protection coatings stand out in the market due to several advantages:

  • excellent fire resistance rating — up to 150 minutes
    fast drying time
  • good adhesion to the primer
  • coating appearance
  • highest quality

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Fire protection coating for steel structures

All modern buildings are designed with fire protection systems in mind. Using the most advanced materials and practices can reduce the risk of structural collapse and save lives.

Construction materials deteriorate rapidly when exposed to fire. And although steel, unlike wood, does not burn, exposed to high temperatures, metal structures, including load-bearing ones, quickly lose their structural integrity and may collapse. Unprotected metal structures can withstand high temperatures for only 5-15 minutes. This figure is called the fire resistance rating and is denoted as R.

Fire protection coatings prevent building materials from collapsing for 150 minutes or more, allowing people to leave the burning building and the fire department to save the building itself.

Types of fire protection

There are many types of fire retardant coatings — and each has its own advantages, disadvantages and peculiarities of application. However, all coatings can be grouped into three large groups — thick-film flame retardants and thin-film intumescent paints.

Thick-film fire retardant coatings and fire protective boards

These methods are used when it is necessary to achieve a fire resistance rating of R90 to R150. This kind of fire protection assumes the creation of a thermal insulation layer on the surface of building structures, which will contain the effects of high temperatures for the required time. Such a layer can be created in two ways:

  • The conventional way is to use fire protective boards or other materials – bricks, mineral wool boards, asbestos sheets or gypsum board. These materials have repeatedly proven their effectiveness, but they cannot always be used. In addition, cladding is a rather labor-intensive and therefore expensive process.
  • The second way is the use of thick-coated materials. This can be fire-retardant plasters, or non-intumescent thick-film sprayed materials. For example, in the Stabiterm product line these are Stabiterm-002 and Stabiterm-003 plasters, as well as Stabiterm-222 and Stabiterm-221 coatings. This way is considered more high-tech, as it demonstrates a comparable efficiency to boards, but is much faster to apply and creates less load on the metal structures.

Intumescent thin-film coatings

Intumescent flame retardants are applied in a thinner layer. As the name suggests, their operating concept is based on intumescence — expansion from heat. Under high temperatures, the coating expands by 30-50 times, forming a foamcoke, which provides protection to the steel from the heat.

The intumescent flame retardant coatings for steel structures are the most high-tech solution. The coatings provide a fire resistance rating up to R120 and virtually do not burden the steel.

However, when using flame retardant coatings it is necessary to keep in mind the existing limitations on use — a significant portion of such coatings are not weatherproof, and require the application of a topcoat.

Nevertheless, weatherproof coatings can also be found in the range of almost every manufacturer, for example, solvent-based Stabiterm-209 and water-based Stabiterm-219.

In addition to their practical function, such coatings can be used as an element of decoration since they can be tinted.

INDIVIDUAL FIRE PROTECTION SOLUTIONS

STABITERM SERVICE UNIT, «FIRE PROTECTION WORKSHOP”

Application of fire retardant coatings on steel structures

No less important than the quality of the coating itself is the quality of the application of the coating. Therefore, the best solution is to work with a proven contractor during the construction phase.

Stabiterm’s service unit, Fire Protection Workshop, relieves you of the need to look for a separate contractor to apply fire protection coatings. We have a license and all necessary permits to perform works on fire protection of steel structures.

Our employees are trained and have extensive experience in applying our own compositions. We have all modern technical means for this kind of work. And if the application work is performed by an external provider, we can delegate a specialist to the object for the supervision.

We strive to be more than just a manufacturer. Therefore, we provide a full range of services: engineering of the fire protection scope, application of fire protection coatings, and quality control, acting as a one-stop shop for our customers.

You can significantly reduce your expenses by having a strong team of our experts at your service.
